The Premier League has been around since 1992, and according to Global FootballRankings, it is ranked the number one soccer/futbol league in the world. It is made up of 20 brilliant teams, and currently, the number one team in the league is Arsenal, while the team currently in last place is Burnley. Here are the current rankings: (Disclaimer this was written as of 11-26-23 so some of the rankings may have changed).
Now here is a short biography on the top 10 teams, this will include some of the awards they have won along with the year they were founded, a little history behind the origins of the club, and at the end their current best player. Remember that the best player isn’t all about how many goals or assists they have. Each player was chosen from real data and play-making ability.
1. Arsenal
Arsenal was founded in 1885 as a munition workers' team from Woolich. They turned professional in 1891 and joined the Football League two years later. They were first named Dial Square, named after the heart of the Royal Arsenal complex, but only one month later took on the name of the whole complex. However, they would later change their name two more times to Woolwich Arsenal and then to, as we know today, just Arsenal. Currently, they reside in Islington, London. They have won 13 league titles, a record 13 FA cups (football association), 2 league cups, and many more trophies and titles. As I said before, they joined the football league in 1893 but reached the first division (the premier league) in 1904 and have only been regulated once, which was in 1913. As of right now, their best player is Bukayo Saka, with 4 goals and 5 assists in 12 matches so far this season, despite just being 21 years of age.
2. Manchester City
Over the course of Manchester City's history, they have won nine league titles, seven FA cups, eight league cups, and other awards. Although it wasn’t always so good for Manchester City, At one point, after losing the 1981 FA Cup final, they went through a drought period and ended up getting relegated to the 3rd division of English football in 1996. However, since then, they have gotten back up on their feet regaining promotion in 2001, and have even won the Premier League for the past two years in a row. For a brief history, they were founded in 1880 in St Marks (West Gorton), then renamed to Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, and finally to Manchester City in 1894. The club joined the Football League in 1892 and was one of the original co-founders of the Premier League, although, in their first season, they finished 9th. Which, as I previously mentioned, started their downfall. Currently, their best player is Erling Haaland, who has 14 goals and 3 assists so far this season.
3. Liverpool
Liverpool was founded in 1892. They are one of the most successful English teams in European football tournament history, having won the English top division league title 19 times and many, many more titles and trophies. How Liverpool came to be is quite interesting. It turns out the original team located in Liverpool was actually Everton, but after a dispute between Everton and the site owner (John Houlding), Everton left, and Houlding formed a new team, Liverpool! A key note to Liverpool's constant success would be one of their original managers, Bill Shankly (1959-1974) took Liverpool from the English League 2nd Division to winning 3 English top division league titles, as well as winning the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) cup in 1973 and then another in 1976, along with those 6 English league titles and 3 European cup wins. After that period, they went through a time of turbulence when a wall in the stadium came crashing down in 1985 when Liverpool fans charged Juventus supporters, killing 39 fans. That resulted in Liverpool being banned from European competition for 6 years, and unfortunately, another incident occurred in 1989 during an FA (Football Association) semi-final match when 97 deaths and hundreds of injuries occurred. Luckily, they got back on their feet in 2001, and it has been smooth sailing since then! Currently, their best player is Mohamad Salah; he has appeared in 37 matches thus far with 19 goals and 7 assists.
4. Ashton Villa
Ashton Villa was founded in March of 1874. They have won the Football League first division seven times, the FA Cup seven times, the League Cup five times, and finally the European and European Super League Cup 1. Early on in 1888, club president William McGregor realized a need to keep fans interested, so he and 11 other English clubs of that period, Ashton Villa, founded the Football League led by George Ramsay. Currently, their best player is Ollie Watkins. So far this season, he has scored seven goals and appeared in only 13 games.
5. Tottenham
Tottenham was founded in 1882, having won the Premier League 2, the FA Cup eight times, the League Cup four times, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup, 1 and UEFA Cup/Europa League 2, and many more. Tottenham was founded by a group of grammar school boys at All Hollas Church. In the beginning, the club was named Hotspur, but the name was soon changed to Tottenham Hotspur FC, which is the current name today, but the club usually goes by Tottenham. In 1904, they became members of the Football League, and already in the first season, they managed to get promoted from the 2nd division to the 1st. Currently, their best player is Heung-min-Son who has 8 goals and 1 assist so far this season.
6. Manchester United
Manchester united was founded in 1978 as Newton heath L&YR football club. L&YR stood for Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway company, it was the name of the company the players worked at! They first participated in the Football League in 1892 but were regulated after 2 years. Then a group of local business owners took over the club and renamed Manchester United in 1902. Some of their most notable wins are, they have won the premier league 13 times, the Champions League 3 times, the FA cup 12 times League Cup 5 times, UEFA winner’s cup 1 and UEFA Europa 1 along with several other trophies. Currently, their best player is Bruno Fernandes with 3 goals and 3 assists so far this season.
7. Newcastle
Newcastle United was founded in 1892 and have won the first Division/premier league 4 times meanwhile the FA Cup 6 times. They formed when 2 old clubs combined, Newcastle East end and Newcastle West End, and that was when they decided on the name Newcastle United. Shortly after in 1894 they were admitted into the Football league and promoted to division 1 in 1899. As of now their best player is Anthony Gordon with 6 goals and 3 assists.
8. Brighton
Brighton, also known as Brighton & Hove Albion, was founded in 1901 and was originally named Brighton & Hove United but was quickly changed to Brighton & Hove Albion. They are relatively new to the premier league having joined in the 2016/17 season. They have gone back and forth between the divisions starting in the Third Division in 1920, getting promoted to 2nd division in 1958 and then falling all the way down to fourth division in 1960. Currently their best player is Pascal Gross and so far this season only has 2 goals and 3 assists.
9. West Ham
West ham was founded in 1895 although technically founded in 1885 by Arnold Hills as the name Thames Ironworks FC. Arnold Hills was the director of Thames Ironworks shipyard department, their idea was the a football team would improve relations between directors and workers. Obviously it got more attention and fame then accepted having in the next coming centuries winning the FA cup 3 times and UEFA cup Winners cup 1. As of now their best player is Jarrod Bowen with 8 goals and 1 assist.
10. Chelsea
Chelsea was founded in 1905 by Gus Mears. He was an English man who had previously bought the Stamford Bridge athletic stadium with the plan to turn it into a soccer complex. He originally wanted to rent it to another team, Fulham but that deal was halted so he just decided to start his own club, Chelsea. Some of their main accomplishments are winning first division 6 times, FA cup 8, Football League Cup 5 times, Champions league 2 UEFA winners cup 2, UEFA Europa cup 2. And then voted by the Chelsea fans and supporters Thiago Silva is their favorite team member with 1 goal so far this season but the overall current best player is Nicolas Jackson with 6 goals and 1 assist.
