Student Government Changes
This year lots of changes have been made to the Student Council, but most notably the name change to Student Government. Changing from a council to a government is a big change. Now there are more roles and responsibilities in the Student Government. To combat this big change Student Government answered some questions that have been on everyone's mind.
1. How often do you meet with the Student Government?
The Student Government meets every Wednesday.
2. What is the role of the fourth and fifth-grade students?
To elect a leader of sorts to present grade-wide problems and to share ideas with the government to make Villa better. What are the roles of the chair?: The role of the chair, Elizabeth, is to lead the discussions and help coordinate with all projects. If a tie occurs when voting, she is the tie-breaking vote. The role of the vice chair, Katie, is to assist the chair in idea sharing and voting, but also to help with complex decisions.
3. What is the role of the secretary?
The role of the secretary is split into two parts. Isabella handles communications, she connects with the staff and students to ask for opinions and ideas. Riley is the secretary, she takes notes at meetings and shares the cabinet’s ideas. She also represents student voices. If any student comes to her with an idea, she shares it with the government.
4. What is the role of the treasurer?
The role of the treasurer is to manage funds and finances. Any time the student government needs to purchase something, we go to the treasurer, Charlie, to determine if it is in the budget.
5. If you are not in any of those roles what is your role?
Other roles include assembly director, talent show coordinator, and dance director. If you are not in any of those, you are part of the student body. The student body's job is to vote, create, and share ideas/have a voice with the cabinet (communications, secretary, chair, and vice chair).
6. Is there a big change or goal the student government plans to make or work toward?
Not necessarily however there are some small things student government has in mind that will eventually be worked towards. Any other grade that has an idea though should send an email or share their idea.
7. Would it ever be possible for the whole school to vote for an eighth-grade chair? What is the current voting process?
It is possible, however, there are many students throughout the school and it could become very chaotic. In the current voting process, any candidate for any position must present in front of Mrs. Kaplan and Mr. Slee, along with the other peers competing for the position.
8. How will the new changes in student government affect the rest of the school?
So far there have not been any major changes to our school. As the student government our job is to reflect our personal opinions of our school and compare and contrast the differences and how it can be improved. Also, the other grades most certainly will have a voice in the decisions being made for our school if, the cabinet agrees and the issue is repeating itself we will do our best to solve the problem as a whole.
